Hi Sharon, You need to know which version of Word you have. Then, I suggest, doing a google search with the version plus the words “reading ease.” Alternatively, you can also go to this site and copy and paste your text into here: http://www.online-utility.org/english/readability_test_and_improve.jsp
Hope this helps!

I was so inspired by this blog that I went back, and read your Self Edit blogs 1-4, written before I started receiving your weekly blogs. In them, you mention that pgs 75-78 in your book (8 1/2 Steps) tell you how to get the Reading ease statistics. However word has changed and there is no longer a tools menu. I can find the spelling and grammar under review, but can see no options where I could find and add the Reading ease statistics. Do you have directions to set them up now? Or a website I could use to identify the reading ease of my writing?

Thanks, Sharon

Don’t give up! Just keep trying different stuff every day to see what’s going to work for you.

I am encouraging my self to write and I guess following your blogs and email course, eventually I will be able to do it regularly. Thanks again.

True. But not quite as satisfying…

Hi Clarisse, Could you make your writing time in the morning? We all have much stronger willpower then. Also, fewer things tend to get us off track (especially if we get up before anyone else in the house.)

What do you think about committing a unit of time for writing (Write for 1 hour everyday) versus strictly following a fixed schedule? (Write from 3pm to 5pm everyday)

I’m currently doing the latter. I’ve set in my Google calendar to write from 3pm to 5pm. I’m trying to establish this as a habit.

However, I’m having a hard time sticking to it. It’s not only because of chores and unexpected events but also because I often find myself wanting to do something else.

Sometimes, when it’s time to write an article for a client I feel like doing more research instead or writing a different piece than was planned.

Do you think I should ditch the rigid schedule and just go with the flow?

Thanks

Yes, you can fall down a lot of rabbit holes if you don’t focus your research before you begin it!

I am so printing this out to use as a guideline when I start my novel. Wish I’d had this when writing the several non-fiction books I’ve finished over the years. In fact, in that I’ll be writing a historical novel, I had thought to finish most of my research first. Now I’m convinced that I should frame my major plot points first. Even if such an outline is incomplete, it will keep me on track with my research and prevent me from going down too many unproductive rabbit tracks.
