Yes – ritual is hugely helpful. And as for biological needs, I find the obvious sometimes goes out the door when stressed 🙂

What you’ve just described, Lori, is a ritual. (Especially the part about closing both doors to your office.) I’m a big believer in rituals. They are an enormous asset in helping us focus. Also, it’s common sense that we need to ensure our biological need are looked after first. For me, the big one is hunger. I CANNOT write when I’m starving!

Sometimes I have to watch a three-minute clip from a favourite movie online (where the protagonist finally clues in and gets what s/he wants), which is the phase I’m going through right now, though it’s starting to fizz out. I also need both doors to my office closed, and the routine of getting a cup of tea and a glass of water, going to the washroom (face turning red, but it’s true), and basically making sure all biological needs are looked after before I sit down also helps.

I just discovered focus@will a few weeks ago and I’ve found it very helpful. The pieces of music that the site streams are designed to help you focus. I have always found instrumental music helps me. Even if you don’t use focus@will, there are CDs you can buy with music/sounds to stimulate the concentration part of your brain and tune out other distractions.
