Yes, empathy is really important to effective interviewing.

In my case, I need to practice more of “empathetic responses…”

One of my clients — a research unit at a local university — has taught me about Motivational Interviewing. I hadn’t heard of the acronym OARS, however. Thanks!

I hadn’t heard of “clean language” but it sounds like a very helpful technique. Thanks for sharing it.

If you keep your voice really warm and ask open-ended questions, then being on the phone is no disadvantage. In fact, I prefer it because it allows me to take notes more easily. I put people on speaker phone and then just type.

Great question, Kathy! People LOVE correcting misconceptions!

We have long-term employees, often with 30 to 40 years with the company. My favorite question that usually gets the best quote is what I call the “Barbara Walters” question: What is the biggest misconception about your job?” It not only gets the interviewee to open up, but it also results in information that is especially interesting to the reader.

I work with freelancers, and most of my contact with them is by telephone. I know I have a tendency to ask closed-ended questions and find you suggestions (and those in the comments) a great help!
