I consider you as my boss, and I want to make you happy by raising a query. Should the second sentence in your quote above not be, “Brushing up on your spelling, grammar and proofreading is a good way to do that,” since ‘brushing up’ is singular? Kindly clarify boss.

My father consistently spelled “accelerator” (the automotive pedal) as “exhilarator.” When I pointed out his error, and explained the very different meanings of the two words, he heard me out, nodded his head, and replied, “I never knew that … but, I like mine better.”

Today’s blog is packed full of great advice. I have to say, though, as an HR professional for over 30 years, the comment that more employers are using assessments for hiring is worrisome. Ask most assessment vendors about validity and you will find quickly that they don’t understand it. An organization would have to validate that the assessment they are using is a true indicator of success in each and every job for which they are giving the assessment, which is a time-consuming, costly and cumbersome project not feasible for the typical employer. The liability of using an unvalidated test usually far outweighs any perceived benefit.
