You are already a congenital high-achiever, Maureen!

Thought I was going to start today as a high achiever. 🙂

Thank you for sharing this reminder about sleep. I am going to go back to bed and study it.

Discipline is important but so is knowledge! We know a lot more about sleep than we did 50 years ago (for example, we now understand the disruptive nature of light).

I agree — sleep is absolutely essential!

I think you’re just illustrating how our bodies decide FOR us whether we’re night owls or morning larks. It’s very hard to override basic human biology!

I have a light dinner around 6 pm and generally find myself falling asleep between 8:30 pm and 9 pm. I start to awaken around 4 am, but I take my time getting up. Valuable thoughts do develop overnight. Sometimes ideas develop during a period of wakefulness after I’ve been woken by a disturbance. In that event, I let my mind wander until I fall back to sleep. From years of sleeping in noisy places like dorms, bunkrooms, and motels with thin walls, I’ve learned to make a serious effort to darken the room and to keep foam earplugs handy. On many occasions, I’ve awoken from disturbances while wearing foam earplugs, so I don’t have concerns about sleeping during a fire emergency. Flushing of toxins has been observed in a rat brain while the rat slept. See https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/brain-may-flush-out-toxins-during-sleep. I have also read that if fruit flies are prevented from sleeping, they soon die. Sleep is essential to life, so don’t shortchange yourself.

If it leads to creativity, the writers had better sleep sufficiently.
