Yes, it works for exercise, too. Or just about anything else that part of you doesn’t want to do….

I have been thinking I need to spend a couple of hours a day and it has been hard to get started. Five minutes–I can do that. Maybe I’ll try doing five minutes of exercise too.

You make a really good point, Steve! Everyone’s number (time or word count) is going to be different and no one should set their own number based on what other people are doing. It’s kind of like yoga class: you should set your own agenda — not peek out of the side of your eyes to see what the person beside you is doing!

You have a great ear/eye for metaphor, Jo!

I’ve been telling myself for weeks now that I’m going to write for 30 minutes a day, which is so unbelievably doable, but my inner critic somehow still finds a way to talk me out of it. I love the idea of setting the bar SO LOW that it has no ground to stand on for that argument! Thank you, as always, for your brilliantly practical advice.

I haven’t heard this story before so thanks for sharing! (I wonder who it was…) This is very similar to the Pomodoro which is based on 25 minutes of effort followed by a 5-minute break.

He wrote until the timer went off, then he took a break (5-10 minutes).
