I’d also recommend standing at the podium or location from which you’ll speak–if possible–ahead of time. In these days of ever-changing technology, a podium and mics and monitors and buttons can be confusing. It helps to step into a familiar position at the podium rather than find your way in those important first few moments of your speech.

Good point, Karen. I always felt that being a debater as a high school student taught me to write better essays because the exposition was so similar.

An exposition by any other name will run as smoothly, we hope.

Excellent points, Steven. I should have mentioned the horrible practice — used by many presenters — of READING PowerPoint slides aloud. Ugh! So painful. And you are quite right that stories are naturally easy to remember, eliminating the need for notes!

I’d like to point out the value in the “story” approach. Besides the narrative form as discussed, using a “story” instead of “lecture” helps to keep away from “scripted notes” – using that informal speaking style people like to hear. It’s easier to remember a good story and link it to your key points – which ARE posted on your presentation slides – without “reading the slide”, which is the biggest presentation bore.
