Thanks for your comments, Rosie. You make a good point that newspaper journalism is slightly different everywhere and the situation in one country might not be mirrored in another. In North America, most newspapers are in dire straits but I’m glad to hear it appears to be different in France.

This morning, I read an article in Le Monde about a french monthly PAPER journal Le Monde Diplomatique. It is running very well. Better and better. Because it chose a clear positioning…politically…radically left. Another media is working well: Mediapart.fr on Internet. Its business model = subscription. This news site competes with Le Monde. And another one which runs well: Le Canard Enchaîné…a one-hundred-year weekly paper investigation journal. Mediapart and Le Canard Enchaîné have a high reputation as investigation journalism.

You have to have multiple income streams. For me, I have corporate clients, one-on-one coaching, my course and my book. I’ve never figured out how to monetize my blog so I simply use it as a way to interest readers.

Yes it is hard to make money on a blog, even a popular one. I think to earn a living you have to follow another model, I just don’t know what that is. A friend of mine self publishes YA adult fiction on Amazon. I don’t know if he makes much money at it, however; I too good a friend to ask.

Your comment about Dickens is very interesting — and hopeful! I guess in many ways, bloggers are like Dickens. But it’s hard to make money at a blog!

I was a journalist for daily newspapers for 20 years in the ’80s and ’90s. It was the most fun job on the planet for me. I sorry to say you are right about journalism as a career. I was a PIO for a hospital and then a government wildlife agency. That was also a fun job, but nothing like writing for a newspaper.

It will be interesting to see how writers will earn a living in the future. We may be reverting to a model something like Dickens, Stevenson and others of that age. They started their own magazines and serialized their stories. They got paid by subscriptions and the successful stories were later published as novels. Publishing is becoming more egalitarian with writers able to create their own eBooks or print-on-demand books and then market them on the web. That might be a good topic to explore in a future Write Question.

Keep up the good work!

I, too, prefer professional journalism, particularly print journalism. The problem now is not so much with the 24-hour news-cycle; it’s more with all the ad dollars going to Facebook (and similar sources.) There’s just not much money for traditional journalists any more. So sad!

Because of this educational background, I like to obtain my news from newspapers (even if online), magazines (even if online)– because these sources hire educated journalists. I lament the 24-hour news-cycle, b/c it has led to a reduction in journalism and honest reporting.

thank you D – I love the video!
