Glad you found this so helpful, Emily! I think email has a hugely negative affect on the lives of so many. Containing it to clearly demarked times is an important way of reasserting control over your own life. And, yes, get a NOISY timer. It makes a huge difference!

This is very, very helpful, including your validation of the importance of editing sensitive emails. In particular, I think your suggestion to put emails needing more than 2 minutes onto my to-do list
and working on them with a timer at times of my choosing is going to change my life. This is not hyperbole! It is astounding how email can create an unwanted sense of urgency for me. And while I stay in Steven Covey’s “Quadrant II—”important but not urgent”—in most areas of my life, that level of intentionality has eluded me with email. Also, thanks for clarifying that I need a timer that actually ticks. Mine is silent…and it makes sense that ticking would be a keen reminder of the flight of time:)
