I prefer “says” as the all ’round attribution word. To me, it doesn’t matter if it isn’t a direct quote.

Don’t let those weak quotes survive your editing!

Yes, but know that a good image or analogy can also be successfully paraphrased, as long as it’s attributed to the person who created it.

Agreed. Although sometimes paraphrasing is also EASIER than it looks. If you simply remove the quote marks, I mean. (Obviously, students/academics can’t do this. I’m referring to corporate and freelance writers.)

So glad this point resonated for you, Charli. Learning how to paraphrase is a valuable skill, but learning how to manage the people we interview (and ourselves!) is perhaps even more valuable!

What stood out to me most was #5: Never feel obliged to use quotes from people you’ve interviewed. You know, until I read that statement, I didn’t even recognize that I felt such a sense of obligation. Wow–that was a freeing realization! Thanks!

I usually have some notes and a mind map, then I just mull over it while I do something unrelated. After this mulling time, I usually write the first draft without looking at my notes. After that I go in an put in my quotes.
