Sorry – should’ve put the disclaimer that I danced when I was younger. I had a head start 🙂 But thank you for post – it was excellent and exactly what I needed.

You can do the splits??! And you’ve been working on it since January (that’s only 4 months!) I am astonished! Great photo. Thanks for sharing.

As you said, be kinder to yourself 🙂 I also recently had a birthday, and to commemorate it, I had my dance teacher take a picture of me doing the splits, something I’d been working on since January. (I’d interviewed a Canadian stage icon from my childhood for an article coming out soon. He’s also from Vancouver.)

I would’ve told my younger self to just get started. When I see how much I can pump out for one article (2,500) in about 10-15 hours, depending on the topic, all of those ten-page essays would have been SO much easier. Essays seemed like this BIG THING when in fact they could’ve simply been a part of my day. I still wasn’t used to thinking in routine, but rather in projects.

I also find my first drafts tend to start chronologically. I used to resist that, since it usually makes for a boring start, but now I let it flow. Before I know it, I’ve found the hook for my article several paragraphs below and everything flows from there.

Yay to birthdays!

You’re welcome. All quite minor compared to what I would have if I tried to blog. I am poor at typing in general, and I tend to get my fingers out of order—typing “form” instead of “from,” for instance. Sometimes I don’t get off of the shift key quick enough. I am self-taught which would explain some things. I know I would benefit from a typing course, and I would probably recover the time I don’t think I have to invest.

Thanks so much, Miton. Now fixed!! I’m going to have to be more rigorous with my proofreading, I can see!

Sure–Lesson 2, fourth line, second word–could “so” such…I believe “do” was intended.

Please let me know if you ever spot a typo. The great thing about a blog is that I can fix it right away!

I’m looking forward to your new book. And did I see a typo in this blog? I know you were not worried about trying to please me (smiley), but it sort of did anyway.

Having grown up and lived in Vancouver my entire life, I don’t think I’ve EVER had to write in 98-degree weather. Only rain! (But I have an umbrella.) I can’t imagine trying to write in that kind of heat.

Rule # 2 has become a personal goal for me, and so far I have kept to it but it is not as easy as it sounds. A tip I’d recommend to my younger writing self is to be comfortable. As someone who lives in an area of intense humidity and heat, I find that being comfortable really increases the quality and quantity of my writing. Nothing drains a person more than trying to write in an non air-conditioned room in 98 degree weather.
