I’ve used the Hemingway App on several occasions, and it has helped me tremendously. I am a somewhat lazy writer and this App ‘keeps me in line’. So thank you, Daphne, for introducing this technology into my world. I’ve bookmarked the app and use it frequently. Really like your blog entry.

Writing, of course, involves matters of taste. The Hemingway App will ALWAYS prefer “but” over “however.” In my view, the app is often but not always correct in this. (To me, it’s a question of rhythm.) Also, be aware, as I describe above, that the app treats every “long” sentence the same way and I think this is a mistake. If you’re going to use Hemingway, be sure to use the online utility first,so you can check average sentence length, which is a more useful metric.

I just used the Hemingway App for the first time with ten sentences I had written. Half the sentences were colored. Perhaps some of them could be shortened, but I do not think that the word ‘however’ in that text should be replaced with ‘but’ or ‘yet’. Thank you for your discussion of this tool. It is one I will use again.
