Hi Alexandre, Funnily enough, I’m addressing that question in my video that will be posted tomorrow. Be sure to watch for it!

I often struggle when separating research, writing, and editing. They “teach the right way” to do it in academia, and I am a little stuck with that… This way my writing is sluggish, painful.
Hope I can learn to write like you suggest!

Daphne-

You’re a kind and gracious person. And you’ve always been generous with sharing good ideas. Don’t think I’ve stopped thinking you’re important. You helped shape my thinking about writing.

I, too, must remember *my way* isn’t *the right way* or even the *only way*. There are many paths to the same solution.

When we value an idea deeply, we obsess about it. For me, it’s speed (load time). For you, it’s, “Don’t edit while writing.”

Everyone has a bias or inclination.

I have a self-created mission to save the Internet from slow WordPress sites. For example, this very blog page loads in my browser in 6.5 seconds.

For me, that is way too long. You’re using slow but popular plugins I don’t recommend. (I checked). There are alternative ways to solve this.

First, don’t follow the herd. Don’t trust your speed to a third-party. Learn what makes a real difference –and more important– what doesn’t. Like with writing, there are core skills and knowledge that are significant. Others are a waste of time.

You’re teaching, “Not editing while writing” is a core skill. It makes sense –but not always in every case for everyone.

Same with page speed. Not everyone cares.

Another solution is throwing money at services.

I teach achieving quality speed results using free resources available from WordPress directories. Is free better than paid? Nope. Affordable is all.

Does everyone need to use the cheap way to succeed? No. You’re a successful blogger. Your load time is 3 times longer than makes me *professionally* comfortable.

Does that slowness make you a bad blogger? No more than me “editing while writing” makes me a bad performance engineer.

Thanks for listening.

-Steve

I know many who do an outline befote they start a pirce, but i can’t do that. I HATE outlining. I can’t grab the character(s) with an outline. I still have a hard time with being blocked. I’ll go along, getting some work done, and all of a sudden I lose it. It won’t come back for days.

Yes, that process is guaranteed to lead to frustration. Have you seen my post on how to break the habit? https://www.publicationcoach.com/7-ways-to-stop-editing-while-you-write/

Hi Steve, Thanks for your interesting thoughts. I will try to tone down my language in future because — generally — I don’t mean to suggest that everyone needs to do things exactly the same way I do. You are quite right: we all have our own paths. One exception, though: It’s almost always a bad idea to edit WHILE you write. If I could wave a magic wand and stop everyone from doing this, I would.

Yes, I really wasn’t trying to be mean. It made me sad to see this poor writer spend so much time, unnecessarily.

Thank you for this helpful article!

I thought your comment in the above post that there was “no need to watch the whole thing” because it was too painful was strong and maybe a little mean. But after I watched for a while, I knew exactly what you meant. It was painful to watch, but not in a superior or critical way. In a sympathetic way. It hurt my heart!

I write about how to save the Internet from WordPress abuse.

I’m an unconventional thinker –and so also an unconventional writer. My blog posts (PagePipe.com) are all technical and about solving mobile speed problems with free plugins and themes. I frequently do research on-the-fly –right in the middle of a post. I follow my intuition. This last week I wrote three articles:

Jun 17th, 12:11 pm – 17 common slow plugins – and some faster speed alternatives. (1163 words)

Jun 17th, 12:04 pm – TOP 4 Hello-Bar Knockoff Plugins for Speed (1173 words)

Jun 16th, 10:19 pm – How to remove query strings from static resources with a WordPress plugin. (777 words)

And two unfinished drafts:

Jun 12th, GIF animation headers for Twenty-seventeen theme.

Jun 12th, Twenty-seventeen theme: Common header questions and complaints.

I don’t write in the morning. I don’t have an outline or mindmap. I just jump in. Frequently, I’ll get an idea for another article and write it in the middle of producing another.

You’re a gifted writer. It’s unfair and idealistic to expect others to do things the way you do (or even as I do). There is no one right way.

I edit as I go wandering.

Your fan-

Steve
