Yes, that’s exactly what I hadn’t thought about! Ask more people, check. Factor in extra time for notes, check. I should have done that math because I’m a fairly slow reader myself. I did, however, at least have the foresight to keep a list of everyone so I could acknowledge them if (okay, we’ll say “when”) my book is published. Thanks again. I read every single one of your newsletters and have watched many of these videos, but this one really resonated.

You’re very welcome, Lynette. It’s worthwhile to remember what a big commitment you’re asking of your readers. Only very fast readers can read 300 words per minute. And if people are stopping to take notes for you that’s going to slow them down even more. At minimum, you’re asking people to devote six to 10 hours to reading your book. Not many people have that much time. So get six readers you might need to ask as many as 12 people!

I sent the crappy first draft of my novel to six individuals for a beta read. Only one of them, an avid non-fiction reader, read it and gave me feedback within a week (my deadline request was 30 days). She was able to give me overall comments that led me to change much of the writing in some of the later chapters (very helpful). I think I was either not specific enough in what I was looking for or the folks just weren’t able to make the time commitment. I’ll be asking others to read it after I do some more rewrites and will definitely use your recommendations on how to put together a stronger beta-reader team. Thank you for this installment!
