Thanks for this useful info, William. I’m going to go look it up myself, now…

As someone who has been both a night owl AND a morning lark (at different times in my life) I can say that our ability to get up early or to stay up late is well beyond our control! We are just born a certain way…

Your readers might want to take a look at a paper from Nedergaard’s Lab: “The Glymphatic System: A Beginner’s Guide.” In short, sleep is a “biological necessity.” During sleep, the glial brain cells shrink, opening up pathways for metabolic wastes to flush from the brain. The abstract can be found by searching for either Nedergaard Lab or for the above title of the paper (which seems to be behind a pay barrier).
William.

Although I spent many nights observing stars and galaxies until dawn, that sort of activity does not require much mental energy. As a college student, I was probably the first person to go to sleep on the entire campus! I still remember struggling through a math exam that the professor decided to schedule at 9 pm (thinking he was doing us a favor). I made it through the exam on adrenaline. My alertness peaks in the morning and when I begin to feel brain dead around 9 pm, I give up and go to sleep — very fast!

That’s a very smart way for a night owl to approach writing, Charli!

Glad to hear the pomodoro worked for you! If anyone else is interested in learning about this technique you can read more here: https://www.publicationcoach.com/why-you-need-your-own-pomodoro-2/

I just start my day later than most but do as you suggest and write first.

But since then I have developed the 25 minute habit that you have often written about and that sorted it!

If you’re a morning person, BE SURE to do your writing first thing in the morning. You’ll have the energy for it and it will make you feel so much better.
