However, I’ve sat at the knees of journalists who’re specialists at these elements of craft: John Sawatsky of ESPN, Jacqui Banaszynski of the college of Missouri, and Tom French of Indiana College someone do my coursework for me– all of whom have taught at Poynter.

Not lengthy in the past, I taught a workshop on those topics to the young guys of Poynter’s Write field program, approximately 40 minority students attending centre school and excessive school.

Yes, transcribing has gotta go! It’s way too time-consuming. I try to do many interviews by phone — that way I can put my phone on “speaker” and type directly onto my desktop computer, which has a much nicer keyboard than my laptop. That said, there are benefits to being in the same room as the person you’re interviewing so a laptop still comes in handy. I think you will be so much happier once you return to this habit, Jennifer!

Funny, I used to take notes by hand when I started out as a reporter waaaay back. Now, I find I can’t keep up. I have used the “just a minute, while I catch up” tip many times and it’s a great way to pause and re-group. I’ll try your tip to work directly on my laptop. The transcribing has gotta go!
