Yes, I’ve been a guest for a couple of them. I was on Ed Gandia’s podcast. And I was also interviewed for Barbara Oakley’s Learning How to Learn (not a podcast, but similar enough in style.) I think I’ve also done a couple of others but just can’t remember them right now.

Inspired idea, Fred. Taking swag to places that won’t let you sell is really smart! Wish I’d thought of that!!!

As a self-published non-fiction author, I caution against speaking for free with the expectation of selling books or other merch. More than once, I spent time preparing and speaking, and did not sell one book — in other words, these groups were happy to use me and my time as their free entertainment. What I learned to do was to require a minimum (wholesale) purchase of books, which they could re-sell to members or give away as door prizes.

This blog really extended how I had thought about promotion. The idea of meeting with a book club is very intriguing — and it sounds like fun. Also, the idea of using Quora as networking opportunity rather than just as an information source is great. As one of those “why didn’t I think of that?” ideas, it probably results from my paleo-digital origins. I was fascinated by William Gibson’s accounts of cyberspace, but don’t reflexively think like a digital native.

Seems like using this ideas in combination would be helpful as well. For example, some of the places I speak don’t allow me to sell materials at the back of the room, but they might be OK with swag — imprinted of course with contact information for follow up questions.
