Oh, I didn’t take it as an insult! I was just being a smart aleck.

Thanks for sharing this quote. It’s really interesting. I’ll definitely check out the book.

The Indiscreet Letter By Eleanor Hallowell Abbott 1915.
I think about the clever construct of this description of a single man. I read this several times a week and tried to diagram it. It’s a fun read by the way.

You make a good point Elaine. It’s really important to retain your own voice. (I wish more editors understood this.)

So eager was I to reach out and snatch the holy writing grail, I eagerly made all the changes suggested by some amazing writers. But I lost my voice, my tone, my particular way of writing. And I was not happy with the results. I had to learn to listen, digest, and then decide whether the suggestions made sense or not. It took me some time but I realize I had to go through that protracted stage in order to get to where I am now.

Hmmm, I’m honestly not sure! Wish I could afford to check with my copy editor every week. I will ask her the next time I’m speaking with her and post back here. Thanks for raising the issue!!

Writing IS work but fun work as a reader said in response to last week’s column!
