Interesting, isn’t it, how the word “discipline” trips us up. We feel as though we’re not being disciplined enough when we take breaks from our writing. But, instead, the breaks give us the refreshed vision we need in order to be able to finish the piece of writing. Nothing undisciplined about that, I say!!

Rest assured there is NOTHING wrong with you, Judi! Nor does it reflect a lack of concentration or discipline. Instead, it’s a simple way of improving your output!!

I’m not sure how this ties in with Cal’s ideas but I know that taking many breaks from writing — and then going back to it — usually leads to a far superior end product, at least for me!

My efforts to be disciplined about specific writing times were just not giving me the same inspiration I received from short spurts of activity. Meeting others, discussions, reading, even solitary moments while in transit or doing some shopping provided me the small bits of light I needed. Thanks for discussing this. Not everyone takes the same path.

I thought my power of concentration or discipline was lacking. I also return to a piece multiple times because I really need fresh eyes to make it better. Now you given me your blessing to write in a way that comes naturally to me. Thank you!

It all makes you more refreshed, a more interesting person and writer, and more open to ideas. Cal Newport talks about that in Deep Work too. It makes a lot of sense. Thank you!
