I think satisficing is particularly important for thesis-writers. I heard the numbers once (and can’t remember them now) but there’s a shocking number of doctoral candidates who never finish their thesis. My view is that this is because they can’t reconcile themselves with producing something that isn’t “perfect.” So sad….

Thanks Daphne! What about writing for examination purposes? Can I satisfice there too? I’m concluding my doctoral thesis and no amount of editing seems good enough. I recently made a list of the most important concepts to revise, but I find I keep going back to the less important ones. After resolving to prioritise and complete only what I’ve planned for the day, I encounter your ‘satisfice’. Now, I’m off to satisficing or at least working to figure out how to…

In reply to melwriter. Well, your job is quite different if you're supervising students. Of course correct grammar and spelling are a minimum. (But remember, some of those kids might have learning disabilities. My own son is a really good writer but he can't spell to save his life. He's dyslexic.)

I am constantly faced with the concern that I am too picky – especially with the writing of student interns at my current job. Still: correct grammar and spelling are the minimum. And I have students who submit writing samples for which they have received a good grade, but contain misspelled words and incorrect punctuation. Shouldn’t that be the minimum??

In reply to Barbara Chaney. Here's a trick for websites, Barbara. Remind yourself that it's pretty easy to change/fix the writing later (especially if you're using Wordpress). The revamp is version 1. The fixes become versions 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 etc. etc.

Like others here, I’ve had to put my perfectionist thoughts aside to be able to write for clients. It’s still hard sometimes though, especially now while I’m revamping my own website. Thanks for the reminder!
