Ah… the whim of inspiration. This is a biggie for me – as I have always believed it’s not good to push it. There are some days I don’t know what I’m going to write and I just start, giving myself permission to write a bad first draft – and it does all come together – so it didn’t take inspiration to start. And other days it feels like pushing things too much to even do that – I like the idea that perhaps it’s not all about inspiration – more about creating an environment that supports something to emerge. Rather than giving up on it and wasting a whole day playing on my computer.

I had given up the idea my natural conversational style was amateurish and I needed a formal education in English. Though that might be true in some writing fields–journalism, technical writing, etc., it isn’t in my field. In fact, conversational style is not only preferred, it is taught. I’d also given up the idea people are not approachable. If that was the case, I’d not be writing for over two-years for an on-line e-zine in a passionate field of mine.

Here’s another: give up the habit of stopping work for the day if you don’t like what you’ve written. If you have a target of so many words that day, you should hit it, even if it’s a slog. I often read back on my work and find the writing I produced on bad days is just as good as what I wrote on any other day, it just took more effort. I’m pretty sure I took this advice from another of your columns and it has proved invaluable.
