I agree. I think self-publishing is often the better option — particularly if you have a way of reaching your audience (as I do with my newsletter and website.)

An agent I once worked with said he was getting out of the business because he felt traditional publishing gave authors a really raw deal. One notable example was a friend who won a prestigious contest that guaranteed publication of her novel. The novel sold well, better than any of her succeeding books. But since the publishing company holds the copyright and prints it on demand, the book never goes out of print and our author-friend is stuck with the royalties the publishing company first granted her. Traditional publishing companies may still hold a lot of power, but don’t forget: they NEED writers’ creative talent! Don’t give them your work for peanuts!
