Someone actually said that? The line belongs in a sitcom! Also, your student might want to remember that novelists are allowed to MAKE THINGS UP!!

Here’s another perspective on the same issue: people who are good writers but feel they have nothing to write about. Their life has been eventless, conflictless and boring, they feel, and therefore not worthy. I even had one lady say to me at a writing seminar, “Well Mitch, all of us haven’t been as lucky as you to have an unhappy childhood to write about.” I tell them Miles Davis didn’t have an unhappy childhood either, but he could sure blow that blues horn. My theory; be at my keyboard at 7am every day and my Muse, if she wants to, will know where to find me.

A friend of mine did the same thing and reported it was true. Lucky for me! I’m so hopeless at math that I didn’t even check it. (Maybe I need to get more relentless about math?)

I used an Excel spreadsheet to double-check the math. It sounded impossible to start with a penny, double the amount each day for 30 days and have $5.36 million, but you’re right! Wow. Relentless effort, regardless of the kind of work involved, can pay off in huge dividends over time.

Sounds as though you, too, are being relentless — in a good way!

I’ve been blogging five days a week for just over a year now and have had no difficulty maintaining that schedule. Don’t think I could have started out that way, though. I began with a once-a-week newsletter seven years ago. Practice makes a huge difference.

I have blogged on beauty and style for the past 3 years, purely for pleasure. I tweet. I pin. I Facebook. It can be difficult to keep up with the pace and know when to “publish” a post. Through my own tireless pursuit of what I love to do, (writing about beauty and beautiful things), I have become a better writer. And reading today’s newsletter inspired me to work even harder. It’s like doing homework. With practice and dedication, along the way, you eventually learn and begin to master something.

I think of all I have learned from you EVERY time I write. Thanks very much for the inspiration and confidence to continue my pursuit!

Thank you for sharing and guiding. You are also a thoughtful role model to share your bits of anecdote – at just the right time/way.

I’d never heard of Jonathan before. I’m so impressed. I often thought about committing to producing a paragraph a day, but it seems like I’d be setting myself up for failure. Feels like something I have to work up to.

How long have you been writing 5 days a week for, Daphne? And, did you slowly work your way up to five days or was it something that came naturally for you?
