I’ve had a rocky few weeks but am feeling inspired by your son and by your own writing. Thank you!

What you’re talking about is public accountability. This is a really good idea for anyone who wants to get something done but is having difficulty with it.

Deadlines are also the driving factor for me to get something done. Not having a deadline makes it hard. That’s why I still haven’t published the how-to-book I wrote, even though it’s basically finished. Okay, I am setting a deadline right now for the end of the month 🙂

I started a blog of drawings several years ago with the intention of posting a new drawing once a week. I committed to it in order to push myself into drawing. The result: when the end of the week comes near I feel an urge and a responsibility toward my blog visitors. It pushes me into action, and even though I am not always within the one week mark for the post, I won’t let more than 10 days slip. I can tell from the visitor statistics that people are looking out for it.

We had a truly wonderful trip. Not the least bit relaxing but invigorating, exciting and interesting! Now I just need to recover from my jet lag.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Deborah. I can only hope my son finds a talented partner who also makes a good income. It worries me a little to see him trying to embark on a career in the arts — particularly an art that seems on the decline rather than the ascendancy. But he loves it so much, I could never counsel him to do anything else.

On top of his musical gifts, he’s also a talented writer! I really enjoyed his Tumblr posts; documenting his journey is such a smart idea.

I also have a gifted son. He started dancing when he was 4 yrs old, and now, 25 yrs later, he’s dancing (urban/contemporary) all around the world. He’s had the most amazing adventures in so many different countries, but other than some photos and hurried emails, there’s very little record of his dance life. He regrets that now. He’s a great writer and has always enjoyed writing, but as life got busier, he didn’t take/make the time.

The saving grace is that he recently married a beautiful dancer from his company who loves to journal! Hopefully she’ll be able to capture some of their world on paper!

Congratulations to Duncan! I hope you and your husband enjoy your own journey travelling to Europe to watch your son on stage!

If you’re interested in building the skill at home (and I recognize you might not be) try using pomodoros:

There’s something about when I’m working on a job at home, as opposed to onsite at the company. Never have problems on site, always have problems at home. Aside from domestic distractions, I just seem to be more structured and efficient with my time when I’m around others doing the same. And I don’t get that perfection-to-frozen issue when writing on site as I do when writing in my home office.
Enjoy Vienna – and your son!

The discipline you describe sets you apart – and it shows that you teach what you have mastered.
