I’m glad they did, too. I get many new subscribers from Learning How to Learn every year!

I do use Keynote to prepare animations for my kids who never learned to read in school. They love them, but they take time, if I add sound effects, and so on. But then it’s followed by an Adobe Captivate chance for them to create the words themselves.

These guys are at the very beginning of the reading spectrum. But I always make sure to include the words in a phrase, or a sentence, with appropriate art, and questions that are open-ended. It works. But a tremendous amount of time needed to do it. I need a workforce! ;D

I forgot to mention that I never used Powerpoint! My mistake. 😉

Good instinct, to focus on the topic! My only caution would be to remember that the tool (Powerpoint) usually leads to certain specific results (lists of words, often boring).

I don’t know. When I taught that age, I wanted them to focus more on their ideas about the topic, and expand it from there with art.

You make a very good point here, Jon. The trouble is, the tool helps SHAPE the user. I have known high school teachers who spend a lot of time telling kids exactly how many words they should post per slide. Instead, they should be getting them to focus on pictures, don’t you think?

But with a deft touch there’s plenty you can do with PowerPoint. As Garth Reynolds and Nancy Duarte have demonstrated, it’s more the user than the tool that results in mind-numbing corporate presentations.

Biggest issue: mistaking the medium for something else (like word processing, or desktop publishing).
