A not-so-brand-new book, March, by Geraldine Brooks, fascinated me. The backstory of the Little Women’s father was heart-wrenching, and kept me hooked from page 1 to the end. Have you read it?

In reply to LJ. I read Why We Get Fat several years ago and really enjoyed it. (Although it was VERY dense reading.) The New Jim Crow sounds interesting, too. I think it will reinforce my view that American incarceration rates are way too high...

My favourite book so far this year is The Lie Tree, by Frances Hardinge, which won a 2016 Costa Book Award. It’s a book for younger readers (11+), but adults can enjoy too. Historical fiction with a twisty plot, gorgeous prose, science angle, and a protagonist with plenty of drive.
