This is a prime reason why we need some DISTANCE (aka: incubation time) before we are in any shape to edit or to accept criticism. When someone offers you some criticism, the wisest thing to do is to THANK them and reserve judgement. I’m convinced that the reason you were able to accept this criticism now is simply because you had had some time away from the poems. Remember this for future!

The thought of cutting certain words or lines hurt, so I insisted they were wrong. Recently, I looked at the constructive criticism on a few poems and realized the person was right. While aiming for length, I added unnecessary words that ruined the poem.

Freelancing is practically the very definition of something requiring stubbornness!

Probably not always in a good way. But it’s helpful in that I don’t give up on things I’m writing, even if I go months (or years) without working on them. Freelancing requires a certain amount of stubbornness, as well. 🙂

The next trick is to have that realization just a little bit sooner…

So true – I can spend a morning attempting to write a statistical paragraph plainly — only to realize only statistical-types read these bits of my papers! GAH!

‘Huachafo’ comes from an English word ‘Whitechaps’ -the style English railway men and others spoke about parvenus whether at home or in Peru. Like others elsewhere, the ones in Peru may get money but lack taste. (work cited from book by Felipe Lucia Pezer)
Some other loan-words in my country from the Englishmen: ‘gasfitero’ for the Spanish ‘plomero’ or plumber (i.e.gas-fitter) ‘Huachiman’ to describe the security agent, watchman… list is endless 🙂
